Iām dr. Maya Schutte, and work as a freelancer in science communication and design.
I advise researchers on how to clearly and effectively convey their scientific message. I design illustrations, infographics and animations to simplify complex messages for presentation slides, grant proposals or scientific articles. Also, I like to write about science for the general public by combining my writing with clear visuals.
With my academic background and expertise in design, I offer a unique perspective that allows me to offer insightful guidance when communicating science.
Previous clients: UMCU, LUMC, Hubrecht Institute, KU Leuven, Erasmus MC.
Background
After a PhD in neuroscience, I taught myself the principles of design and mastered a variety of design tools along the way, including Procreate, Adobe Fresco, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
During my work in academia I found myself consistently fascinated by the challenge of effectively communicating my scientific findings in the simplest and most understandable manner possible with clear visuals. This consideration proved crucial not only when writing papers, but also in presenting my research and designing graphs, tables and other imagery.
By taking on a creative approach, I aim to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and public understanding. I regularly post on Instagram about the field of neuroscience with illustrations and animations. Illustrations and animations are a fun way to convey a complex message, reaching a younger audience.
